Every time I watch the Travel Channel or read a book of far off lands, I long to abandon all of life’s commitments. Modern society has begun to isolate itself from variety in favor of self indulgence. Americans cry out over increasing grain prices with rice being the current center of the raging economical attention, yet very few people have considered how this may affect the poorer nations. Rice is considered to be the staple of many families’ diets in Asian and Persian countries. However, Americans are panicking over debt resulting from a reliance on fuels such as gasoline and ethanol-which oddly enough, needs gas for production.

My friends tell me my need to travel isn’t practical. Not to mention, I have no true sense of direction. Why is a desire to connect with other cultures while getting lost along the way such a terrible thing? It’s not as if I’m interested in lounging about on a beach in Miami or dropping thousands of dollars at Vegas. Hell, it took me forever to convince myself to buy an eighty-nine cent owl key-chain because I was conscience of being over indulgant. Sure, I’d like to travel to Europe, but I’d be more than willing to work on an ocean liner to get over there only to backpack across the continent starting from a Spanish port city to the coast of China on my own. For me, traveling to foreign countries doesn’t have to involve staying at a posh hotel with all the amenities I’d never have at home. People are what interest me in the end. Should imminent danger be my shadow, so be it. Life was never meant to last for eternity.

America’s glory days are over for my generation. Perhaps the US will return as a top competitor one day, but I’ve had enough of corporate struggle and political agendas. Our history is beautiful while our present is lacking unity, and our future is dying under the weight of expectations. The grass may not be greener outside of the United States’ boarder, but I’m certain there’s enough love to be shared. Life isn’t about the final destination, it’s about the journey. If you cannot share in the world’s joys and sufferings, then you have no sense of your place within it, and you can make no connection with people you could only imagine.

It could be that I’m overreacting. Maybe America isn’t so poor in perspective or as bad as the media has led me to believe. I could, in fact, be a part of the problem, and I might need a chance to clear my mind of all negative thoughts. Even then, I will dream of drifting off of the straight and narrow path. I am determined to discover the journey.
