COOL Archives: Metta Prayer

This beautiful prayer is derived from the Metta Sutra. I found it in Lama Surya Das' Awakening the Buddha Within, an excellent book on Buddhism.

This may be one of the most powerful and self-transformational prayers one can utter.

The Metta Prayer

May all beings be happy, content and fulfilled.

May all beings be healed and whole.

May all have whatever they want and need.

May all be protected from harm, and free from fear.

May all beings enjoy inner peace and ease.

May all be awakened, liberated and free.

May there be peace in this world, and throughout the entire universe.

The Buddha has said that this prayer will be great benefit to those who recite and meditate upon this.

According to Lama Das, you will "sleep easily, wake easily, have pleasant dreams, people will love you, celestial beings will love you and protect you; poisons, fire and other external dangers will not harm you, your face will be radiant, and your mind concentrated and serene; and you will die unconfused and be reborn in the happy realms." What more could a Buddhist or human being ask for?

COOL Archives: AUM

omaum.jpg   From the ancient mystical traditions comes the idea of the Cosmic constant, the prime vibration, the word. The Sanskrit root word or seed sound symbolizing that aspect of the Godhead, which creates and sustains all things is called Aum (om). Aum of the Vedas became the sacred word Hum of the Tibetans; Amin of the Moslems; and Amen of the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Jews, and Christians. This energy when flowing was seen as the Holy Ghost, or Holy Light in Middle Eastern cultures, but in Sanskrit it was termed prana. AUM has been said to be the sound of the cosmic vibration of creation, preservation and destruction. The first reference to AUM was seen some four to six thousand years ago in the writings of the Vedas.

COOL Archives: A prayer by Rabindranath Tagore

This is my prayer to thee, my lord -
strike, strike at the root of penury in my heart.
Give me the strength lightly to bear my joys and sorrows.

Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in service.

Give me the strength never to disown the poor or bend my knees before insolent might.

Give me the strength to raise my mind high above daily trifles.

And give me the strength to surrender my strength to thy will with love.

COOL Archives: Sutta Nipata

Buddha's Discourse on Good Will

May all beings be filled with joy and peace.

May all beings everywhere,

The strong and the weak,

The great and the small,

The mean and the powerful,

The short and the long,

the subtle and the gross:

May all beings everywhere,

Seen and unseen,

Dwelling far off or nearby,

Being or waiting to become:

May all be filled with lasting joy.

Let no one deceive another,

Let no one anywhere despise another,

Let no one out of anger or resentment

Wish suffering on anyone at all.

Just as a mother with her own life

Protects her child, her only child, from harm,

So within yourself let grow

A boundless love for all creatures.

Let your love flow outward through the universe,

To its height, its depth, its broad extent,

A limitless love, without hatred or enmity.

Then as you stand or walk,

Sit or lie down,

As long as you are awake,

Strive for this with a one-pointed mind;

Your life will bring heaven to earth.

COOL Archives: Native American Prayer for Peace

be1

Oh Great Spirit of our
Ancestors, I raise
my pipe to you.
To your messengers the four winds, and
to Mother Earth who provides
for your children.
Give us the wisdom to teach our children
to love, to respect, and to be kind
to each other so that they may grow
with peace of mind
Let us learn to share all good things that
you provide for us on this Earth.
